Information

Thomas Fulton Bourdillon (1849-1930), was the Conservator of Forests in the state of Travancore. During his 15-year reign, the forest department underwent a period of modernisation which led to them being more efficient. His keen interest in botany led to him authoring the first book on the trees of the region titled The Forest Trees of Travancore which was published in the year 1908. Bourdillon also would go on to work with some of his biggest contemporaries such as R.H. Beddome and Harold S. Ferguson. This book was the result of the botanist’s work over more than two decades.

He was appointed in June 1886 to make a thorough examination of the forests of the State "to mark and define those tracts which should be permanently reserved," to submit a report on their resources, especially noting the condition and extent of the forests of teak, to prepare maps showing the character of the forest in different localities, and finally to bring to the notice of Government any points worthy of attention.

It was possible due to the help of the Travancore government that supported his venture and provided financial assistance as well. To check what a specimen was, Bourdillon had them sent across to Col. Prain F.R.S. of the Calcutta Herbarium and to M.A. Lawson, a Government Botanist in Ootacamund. He also sent a few specimens abroad to Dr Staff at the Kew Botanical Gardens which is located in London. Before the publication of The Forest Trees of Travancore, Bourdillon submitted proposals to the Travancore Government with an eye on the management of forests in the future.

His main ideas were to reserve forests, improve the condition of forests through regeneration as well as the establishment of plantations. Though explorations had been undertaken before Bourdillon, he was the first person to fully analyse the Travancore region and identify the course of action that was necessary. His legacy still stands to this day and he also has a tree species and two bird subspecies named after him. Bourdillon was passionate about botany, forests and the measures needed to safeguard them. His efforts to the betterment and flourishing of flora in the region have been significant.

The tree species Aglaia bourdillonii, bird subspecies great eared-nightjar Eurostopodus macrotis bourdilloni and the blackbird Turdus merula bourdilloni are named after him.

The standard author abbreviation used to indicate this person as the author, when citing a botanical name: Bourd.
