Information

Henry Trimen (26 October 1843 – 16 October 1896) was a British botanist whose work took him to Sri Lanka. There, he became well-known for his work in the field of botany as he ended up naming many species in the Dipterocarpaceae family. Born in London, he studied medicine at the King’s College Medical School but found himself more interested with natural science. This was evidenced by the number of plant samples that he collected. He was keen on studying the history behind the subject and had the power of accurate observation that allowed him to gain expertise in the field. His work was known for having a wide outlook that was helped enormously by his medical background.

He went to the University of Edinburgh where he was a part of the Edinburgh Botanical Society. This is where his interest in the field of botany really began to take shape. Trimen served as the editor of the Journal of Botany where he was part of reforms that were done in the Linnean Society. He later moved on to become the curator of the medical at King’s College, London and he became part of the Botanical department of the British Museum in 1869. During this time, he also served as a lecturer on Botany at the St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School from 1867 to 1872.

Eventually he made his way to Sri Lanka or Ceylon as it was known then. During his time in the country, he was the director of the Royal Botanic Gardens today known as the Botanical Garden of Peradeniya. During his 16-year reign at the Gardens, he created the Museum of Economic Botany. Along with this, subsidiaries of the garden came up in Badulla and Anuradhapura. It was in Sri Lanka that Trimen would come up with the work that would in many ways go on to define him. The Flora of Ceylon was unfortunately not completed before his death, but the timely contribution of others ensured that it got done. Today, it stands as an important work in the field of botany in general and Sri Lanka in particular.
