Information

Ethelbert Blatter (15 December 1877–26 May 1934) was a Jesuit priest from Switzerland who would go on to have a huge impact on botany in British India. His work on the flora of the Indian sub-continent would lead to the publication of five books and over sixty papers. During his time in India, he would also become the principal and professor of Botany for St. Xavier’s College in Bombay as well as the Vice-President of the Bombay Natural History Society. Blatter would also be first recipient of the Johannes Bruehl Memorial Medal from the Asiatic Society of Bengal. He would make his first trip to India in 1903 after developing an interest in botany after he had attended many conferences around Europe.

In Bombay, his first job was to work on The fauna and flora of our metallic money. He submitted articles on this to the Bombay Natural History Society. This work was humorous in nature as it focused on the microorganisms that lived on the Indian coins. Having lived in India for around six years, he had made important contributions to works on the palms of British India and Ceylon. These articles would be later published by the Oxford University Press. In 1909, Blatter returned to Europe with the intention of completing his theological studies.

His second trip to India would happen in 1915 and he would go on to live in the country until his death in 1934. Blatter would travel and add to his extensive botanical collection. It was in 1925 that he retired to Panchgani where he would have the time to focus more on his botanical studies. Blatter collaborated with W.S. Millard to produce a book titled Some Beautiful Indian Trees. This is considered to be a classic in the field that has provided future botanists with a lot of knowledge. Though his work in botany reduced significantly after he had a fall during a trip to the North-West Frontier Province, his passion remained the same. Blatter’s works are listed among the most important works in understanding the botany of the Asiatic region.
